TRAVEL 002 - JAPAN PART TWO - MATSUMOTO AND AZUSAGAWA

L'ascolto: JAPAN PART TWO / GLAY

It has passed a whole winter during which for a thousand reasons, perhaps not all valid, I could not get my hands on the keyboard to honor and remember the latest releases of fishing in japanese rivers and especially who made them possible, showing me friendship and availability.

Gran cosa! ... "

"... planning to spend few days in Matsumoto, a town in the mountains in Nagano Prefecture, where flow the most beautiful rivers in Japan, I asked my wife to find a contact to be able to arrange at least one fishing. Thanks to the collaboration of Hotel Yorozuya staff  (all credits go to a zealous and impeccable lady in pure Japanese style), we had a reference point in a local fishing shop, as well as a daily licenses for the Azusa River water basin (Azusagawa) retailer. So, before we left Italy we already had a contact and let us say, an appointment. Because the owner of the store would have waited us, until 8PM, on the day of our arrival.    Big deal! ... "

So, left  Kyoto, where, with Yoshikazu San, we went fishing Amago in the mountains , and after have been wandering from south to north, one evening in late September we came in Matsumoto, a little after 7PM. We still have to find and check-in at the hotel and especially arrive before 8PM at the store where the owner is waiting us to get the license for the next day, in a hurry we got to do everything, it was dark when we arrived at the door of UOKANE fishing shop, where the Lady YUKIKO welcomed us. Just cross the threshold it was like I arrived in the land of toys, everywhere gathering objects and equipment like the ones I saw watching Sampei anime when I was a kid. I almost could not believe when, from the back of the store, Mrs. YUKIKO comes to us with a big smile , greeting and welcoming us. The niceties of the case and immediately she unfold on the counter the maps she printed to guide me the next day on the river, in the mountains. She explain  me in an excellent English the rules for every section of the river, where is better and how to fish , we talk about fishing and how we have arrived there. The kindness of Mrs. YUKIKO left me speechless, she explains everything in detail before we say goodbye and gives us traditional flies and a couple of beers lager. We drink them along the canal in the center of Matsumoto.Amazed by the beautiful shop and by the manner of Mrs. YUKIKO, we just have to sleep awaiting the wake at 4AM and then take the road to Sawando on the Azusagawa.

So, wake up call at 4am, at the station in a hurry to get a daily pass, then again in a hurry to the platform, a bit of relax in the hot of the carriage eventually, where, after half an hour you can enjoy the landscape of rice fields at dawn, orchards and woods come in quick succession until the end of the line, where the journey continues by bus through dozens of hairpin bends, tunnels and four dams, to get to Sawando. we get off the bus, in the middle of a parking lot a vending machine with great surprise and pleasure has small cans of hot coffee, and given the early wake up this is extremely welcome. Without wasting other time we are on the river, low level and, as before, I feel rather confused, some bites on the surface of the water in a beautiful esplanade, wary fishes, however a small fario trout, just like ours, comes out, and I am just happy for it. I cannot see much more along the whole stretch that I climbed, the setting is beautiful, arriving at a dam, where I stop with local fishermen, I do not know how I understand them, but they say there are many cherry salmons and that I could get something fly fishing just below the dam wall, but given the fences, I do not trust to slip in a private property, so I thank and greet them and quit fishing,  continuing the day hiking in the mountains.

Considering the first exit rather fruitless and that does not happen every day to be in Japan, I give myself another exit, still on the Azusa River. Led again by Mrs. YUKIKO and made an 'other license, this time for a much longer stretch downstream of the first , always on the same river. Got permits, back to the station, this time just a couple of train stops, a few hundred meters walk and here we are on the river. A spectacular riverbed, I do not know how much large, running water and not very high, a single gravel bank, nice, although not too many references for my taste. I fish with the buzzards that fly a few meters above my head, patrolling the river in search of some fish remained dry due to the closure of the dams upstream. I enjoy the show and try to find the key to the problem.

You do not see movement afloat , least of all some nymph hunting, I wast time waiting for the sunset flipping over some rocks to see which kind of insects there are in the place. To my surprise I remain amazed by the amount of macro fauna and most of all by its size, some pictures for future reference.

I give up, I am looking for a comfortable place where I think fish can be and I start to watch what happens on the water, at first nothing, then as the sun goes down some little bites on the surface of the water appear , discrete and rarefied, slowly they become more constant and decided, I also decided to put on a small emerger fly that never betrayed me, I cast and realize now that it's dark and I can not  see a small fly like the one I used. Time to think about it and a firm bite arrives where I thought the fly could be. And so I strike. Here it is !!! The bite was on the fly, now a fish , even if not so big, resist with a resolute defense, and after a while it is among the rocks of the bank. I can not believe I caught a Yamame, a real chimera to me, a small fish that is worth a great trip.

Just time to take a picture , to look at the trout that goes through the stream of the river and taste the satisfation of even the modest catch.  It is getting dark now and we take the way back to the station enjoying the sunset on the river. Thinking about how in few little moments it is condensed the commitment of full days and energies of different people I feel joy because these have not been wasted.

In the end, I feel obliged to thank those who have made possible what I told in the last two posts in chronological order.
My wife who collected for me all the necessary information and held all contacts with Japan acting as my interpreter when necessary.
The great Mr. Yoshikazu Fujioka , been a guide in the mountains of Kyoto in search of Amago and chars.
The amazing Mrs. Yukiko who gave me the opportunity to know a beautiful river, with a gentleness unequalled and that I will never forget.

And a thousand other people with small contributions ( for example the great staff of Hotel Yorozuya )  who have made possible what I told.
